Heartbreaking

baby quilt

I follow a lot of Facebook pages in the interest of genealogy. I like to read as much as I can on the subject so that if I find something of interest I can pass it on on my own Facebook page; Family History Hound. Today someone posted this photo on a page that I follow and as soon as I saw it I thought I had to share.  They had found this framed baby blanket at the Goodwill. I don’t know if you realize how many family treasures are sent to the Goodwill , put in garage sales, estate sales or flea markets.  And on the other side there are Facebook pages where people retrieve these items by purchasing  the treasures and try to find family members who want these items.

At my genealogy society meetings;  I’ve heard people talk about a sister that had all the family photos and she burned them rather than ask someone else if they might like them. I understand that you can’t possibly keep everything but aren’t certain this special? I know I’ve harped about this subject before but it’s important to make sure that if you don’t want this to happen to your treasures then you need to let someone in the family know that you want them to have that treasure. Then if they tell you that they don’t want it at least you have an opportunity to find it another home.

I guess it’s possible that the lady that had her baby blanket all those years didn’t have a family left to pass this along to when she passed away and that’s sad too. But somehow it’s a bit better than thinking that something she clung to for all of her life is sitting in a bin waiting for an”Angel” to buy it.
