Ancestry’s Genetic Communities & The DNA Angel Project

Recently I signed up for Ancestry’ Beta program called Genetic Communities. So what exactly is it? CEO and President of Ancestry; Tim Sullivan explains that it’s AncestryDNA ethnicity estimates on steroids. There is no additional charge or testing required to participate. So let’s take a look. Below is my own genetic communities.  I have two communities. Both are from my father’s side of the family. The first is from my paternal grandfather’s father’s side. Which is French Settlers Along the St. Lawrence, and if you click on the title you get to see more information on the map.

First, you see the above map and the overview.

Then as you hover over each of the time periods, you see the movement of the settlers. In my case, they first show 1700-1750 Lonely settlers in New France. The also include historical insights for the time period.

Then 1750-1800 New France is divided

Then 1800-1850 Life as second class citizens

Finally, 1800-1850  The “Little Canadas” of New England

Each timeframe has a write up telling you what was happening and why these people were moving. Also included are any of your ancestors that fit the time frame and locations.

My second community is Southern English. Again this comes from my father’s side of the family but this time from my father’s mother’s family. Who lived in Brighton, England.

It shows the migration of people over the various time periods as well as presenting historical events that could have impacted my family; such as the Cholera Outbreaks in England.  This gave me a better understanding as to why my family might have decided to leave England and moved to Canada.

I look forward to seeing more about this new aspect of my ethnic origins.
