Cali Has Another DNA Test, This Time With Ancestry

You know how interested I am in DNA, so Cali has to be interested, too, right? Well, maybe not so much.

(Never fear… Cali never does anything she doesn’t want to do. She truly runs the show at my house.)

In October 2022, I tested Cali’s DNA at Wisdom Panel, which I purchased from Amazon. If you want to read about those results, you can find them on the blog HERE.

When I was at RootsTech in Salt Lake City earlier this month, I was checking out the AncestryDNA booth and decided to purchase one of Ancestry’s DNA kits for dogs. This test isn’t available in Canada but is available in the US, UK, and Australia. The cost of a kit at RootsTech was less than the usual price of $99US.

So, yesterday was Cali’s big DNA day. As you can see from her photo, she was thrilled. The process is pretty easy, although when I scanned the QR code to take me to my Ancestry account, I think because even though I have a dot com subscription, I couldn’t seem to activate the kit. Either I did something wrong, or it knew I was from Canada. However, I could log in to the site petdna.ancestry.com/register and log in to my Ancestry account. So, maybe it was something I didn’t understand.

You need to ensure that your dog hasn’t eaten or drank water for 30 minutes, and then you take the swap and brush the inside of her cheek. The brush is quite big, and Cali has a tiny mouth, so she wasn’t keen on it. I think the swab on the Wisdom Panel kit was more QTip size.

But as you can see in this video, she got over it. Now it’s off to the post office, and we are waiting for the results. Stay tuned to see what Cali and I discover and how it compares to the information we got at Wisdom Panel.
